David de Gea: Will Not Play Against Spurs
Manager Louis van Gaal said Friday that De Gea will not start Saturday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham because he is distracted by his desired move to Real Madrid, the Daily Telegraph reports. “He shall not play.” Van Gaal said. “A player is also a human being more than a player and he cannot manage that. We will have to see who starts.”
De Gea has been linked with Real Madrid all summer, and he has made it clear that he’d like to head to Spain by refusing to sign a contract extension with Manchester United (he has one year left on his deal). United are reportedly asking for €45 million for De Gea, while Madrid do not want to spend more than €25 million. Sam Johnstone and Sergio Romero are the top options to replace De Gea on Saturday, with the former the slight favorite.
